Château de Chazey-sur-Ain

Château de Chazey-sur-Ain, Medieval castle in Chazey-sur-Ain, France.

Château de Chazey-sur-Ain is a fortified residence above the Ain River featuring defensive towers and thick stone walls that evolved from the 12th century onward. Inside are rooms spanning multiple periods, including a library, dining areas, kitchens, and bedrooms that show how inhabitants lived across different eras.

The fortress was founded in the 12th century by the lords of Coligny and later became the residence of Duke Philibert II and Duke Charles III of Savoy. Subsequent changes to the building reflect the different rulers who made it their home.

The preserved interiors include a library, boudoir, kitchen, bedrooms, salons, dungeon, and justice hall, displaying various periods of French architecture.

The castle grounds are open throughout the year for walks outside, though visiting the interior rooms requires booking a guided tour in advance. Contact the address 143 rue du château to arrange your visit.

A digital tour application narrated by a member of the Savoie-Nemours family offers a unique way to explore the interior rooms. This virtual experience reveals details about spaces that might not be easily visible during a standard visit.
