Château de Chatigny, Historical castle in Fondettes, France
The Château de Chatigny features two wings forming a right angle, with round towers and enclosing walls extending to the north.
Built in 1487 on the remains of a third-century Gallo-Roman villa, which contained geometric mosaics and marble decorations measuring 33 meters on each side.
The castle walls display decorative checkerboard patterns made from brick and stone, a characteristic architectural element of medieval French construction techniques.
The castle opens every Saturday from 8:30 to 12:00 and 13:00 to 15:30, plus Sundays from 12:30 to 18:30, with guided tours lasting 40 minutes.
Archaeological excavations in 1890 revealed remnants of Roman baths and heating systems beneath the castle grounds, indicating a sophisticated ancient settlement.
