The Château-Bas de Sedan spans 35,000 square meters on a rocky promontory, featuring thick defensive walls and multiple fortification layers overlooking the Meuse River.
In 1424, Evrard III de La Marck began the construction of the initial triangular castle structure, which included a priory and military fortifications.
The castle represents the architectural evolution from medieval defensive structures to modern military installations, incorporating both residential and garrison functions over centuries.
Visitors can explore the castle through guided tours that present six centuries of history across multiple levels and architectural periods.
The French army maintained continuous occupation of the castle for 320 years until 1962, when the municipality of Sedan acquired it for one franc.
