Château de Châtillon

Château de Châtillon, Medieval castle in Chindrieux, France.

Château de Châtillon is a fortress on a hillside overlooking Lake Bourget, built from stone with distinctive towers and strong walls. The building features an octagonal tower with a winding staircase and a square defensive tower that show the structure typical of medieval military design.

The fortress was founded in the 11th century by the lords of Châtillon, who served as vassals to the Counts of Geneva. Construction evolved over many centuries as the castle transformed from a purely defensive stronghold into a noble residence.

The poet Alphonse de Lamartine spent the summer of 1819 here and met the property owner Hyacinthe Rambert. This encounter became an important moment in his literary life and gives the place meaning for those interested in 19th-century poetry.

The castle is privately owned, but you can visit the gardens from June through September during daylight hours. It is best to check in advance about any special opening days or guided tours, since access is limited.

The lake next to the fortress was formerly called Lake Chatillon, showing how important this stronghold was to the entire region. The name changed later, but this earlier name reveals how much the castle shaped the local landscape and identity.
