Château de Clairvaux

Château de Clairvaux is a Renaissance castle in the French village of Scorbé-Clairvaux featuring Gothic architectural details and double defensive enclosures. The main building stands within landscaped grounds planted with centuries-old trees and now houses museum collections.

Construction of the castle began in 1470 under Renaud Chabot, establishing its original foundation and structure. The property gained prominence when René de Villequier acquired it in 1580 and elevated it to a county seat.

The castle houses a chess museum featuring collections from different regions, including a set used during Napoleon's campaigns. Visitors can see how this strategic game was played across various cultures and time periods.

The castle welcomes visitors year-round with guided tours available to explore the architecture and museum displays. Wearing comfortable walking shoes is recommended as you move through the rooms and outdoor grounds.

The grounds feature rare botanical specimens often overlooked by visitors, including a yew tree shaped like a candelabra and a cork oak. These unusual plants have grown in the park for generations and add an unexpected element to the visit.
