Château de Dieulouard, Medieval castle in Dieulouard, France

Chateau de Dieulouard is a fortress perched on a strategic hilltop with seven circular towers and a fortified gate enclosed within polygonal walls. The entire complex displays a typical medieval military design with multiple layers of defense.

The fortress was founded around 997 by Bishop Adalbert II of Metz and replaced an ancient Roman settlement called Scarpone at this strategic location. It then became an important defensive stronghold in the region.

The museum displays crafted objects from different eras, including pieces from the Renaissance period and classical antiquity. The collection shows how local artisan traditions remained alive across the centuries in this region.

The grounds are accessible year-round, with information panels explaining the fortress's development and military function. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the hilltop is steep and terrain can be uneven in places.

The name derives from the Lorraine dialect meaning 'God protect it,' reflecting the strong religious influence of the medieval period. This naming choice shows how residents viewed the location as divinely guarded.
