Château de Droupt-Saint-Basle, Castle in Droupt-Saint-Basle, France

The Château de Droupt-Saint-Basle is a protected historic castle in the village of Droupt-Saint-Basle, in the Grand Est region of northeastern France. It features two courtyards, a moat crossed by a drawbridge, stone towers, and several outbuildings including a dovecote, a barn, and stables.

The castle was built in the late 16th century by Louis Le Mairat, a merchant from Troyes, who received permission from King Henry III to raise walls and dig a moat. In the 18th century the facades were reworked, and in the 19th century a glass-roofed winter garden was added; during World War II the German army used it as a hospital.

The Château de Droupt-Saint-Basle can be rented for private events such as weddings. Inside, carved wooden staircases and fireplaces from the 18th century give the rooms a sense of what daily life once looked like here.

The castle is located in the village of Droupt-Saint-Basle and is visible from outside; for access to the interior, it is best to check in advance as the property is used for private events. The gardens and outer grounds can be explored on foot, and crossing the old stone bridge over the moat gives a good first sense of the site.

Some walls inside the castle still carry graffiti left by German soldiers during World War II, when the building served as a hospital. The castle was nearly demolished in the 1980s before a family bought it in 1983 and spent close to 20 years restoring it, earning a gold medal in 1999 for their work.
