Château de Duras

Château de Duras is a fortress situated on a hilltop above the Dropt valley with thick walls and four corner towers. The structure dominates the surrounding landscape and displays both medieval features and later architectural additions.

The original structure dates from the 12th century but was transformed into a fortified castle during the 14th century with support from Pope Clement V's family. This period marked the shift from a simple fortification to a major defensive stronghold.

Inside the castle, a museum displays agricultural tools and items that show the region's long connection to plum growing. Visitors can see how this crop shaped the community's way of life over many centuries.

The castle offers regular guided tours and 4D presentations to help visitors understand its history better. Seasonal events are held throughout the year, including demonstrations of traditional falconry techniques that reflect medieval life.

The castle has a connection to Monaco through Princess Louise's marriage to Prince Honoré IV, which linked Pope Clement V, who financed the fortress, to the Monegasque royal line. This surprising dynastic link makes it a place of special historical importance to the principality.
