Château de Ferrette

Château de Ferrette consists of an upper residential section with a tower carved directly into the limestone rock and a lower section with defensive half towers. The structure integrates the natural stone formations and sits accessible via a marked hiking trail from the street.

The castle originated around 1100 as a seat of the Counts of Ferrette before transferring to Austrian rule in the 14th century through a dynastic marriage. This shift marked a turning point in the region's political control and development.

The castle is linked to a cave that features in regional folklore about small beings who once coexisted peacefully with local people. These old stories continue to shape how the area is understood and remembered today.

The castle is reached via a marked trail from the parking area near Rue du Château, with the climb taking roughly ten minutes on foot. The path follows natural terrain, so wearing comfortable shoes and checking weather conditions beforehand is wise.

The residential tower was carved directly into the natural rock formation, representing one of the earliest examples of this building method in the region. This construction approach shows how cleverly the builders adapted to the existing landscape.
