The castle stands in a narrow valley, featuring a 22-meter gatehouse tower with moats fed by three natural springs around the perimeter.
King Philip VI acquired the Vaucouleurs estate in 1335, after which Geoffroy de Nancy received the fief and initiated the castle construction between 1338 and 1357.
The Association Gombervaux organizes historical conferences, including topics such as the beer-making traditions of the Meuse region throughout different time periods.
The castle opens for guided tours during summer months and accepts volunteers for civic service positions to support various cultural activities.
The castle contains the only functioning portcullis mechanism still in operation throughout France, complete with its original lifting system.
