Château de Réveillon, Castle in Réveillon, France
Château de Réveillon is a castle with a U-shaped layout and a paved courtyard, surrounded by moats and formal French gardens. The grounds contain multiple rooms including salons, a library, a chapel, and an adjacent dovecote structure.
The castle was built between 1607 and 1617 by Claude II d'Ancienville and Judith Raguier. It underwent significant transformations after René Louis Voyer de Paulmy acquired it in 1719, reshaping much of its layout and features.
The castle hosted writer Marcel Proust on several occasions, and the gardens became a source of creative inspiration for his literary work. His connection to the place reflects how such estates served as retreats for influential artists and thinkers.
The estate offers guided audio tours that allow visitors to explore the building and grounds at their own pace. These tours are available throughout the year and cover the main rooms and exterior areas.
The property features a remarkable 17th-century dovecote with thousands of individual pottery nesting compartments. Such structures were a common status symbol on aristocratic estates, demonstrating both wealth and attention to practical detail.
