Château de Saint-Agil

Château de Saint-Agil is a castle in Couëtron-au-Perche with a square layout, wide moats surrounding the structure, and a brick and stone entrance pavilion flanked by two defensive towers. The water-filled channels create a protective barrier around the entire complex while the tower-framed gateway controls access to the interior.

Antoine de La Vove built the castle in the late 15th century, reusing the foundations of a 13th-century fortress that once stood on the site. A rear exit passage was added in 1510, indicating ongoing modifications to adapt the building over time.

The castle blends medieval defensive elements with Renaissance ornamental details visible in its facades and towers. This mixing of styles shows how owners valued both protection and beauty in their home.

The castle is privately owned and undergoing active restoration work, so interior access is limited for visitors. Contacting the owners ahead of time is recommended to learn about viewing opportunities and any seasonal closures.

The entrance pavilion features a high roof topped with a sculpted pediment and a lantern tower, showcasing refined French castle design. These decorative architectural elements served to display the wealth and taste of the owners beyond mere practical defense.
