Château de L'Échelle

Chateau de L'Échelle is a fortified castle with a rectangular layout and circular towers positioned at the southeast and northeast corners, each equipped with gun ports on the upper levels. The structure combines residential and defensive elements in a compact design that reflects its dual purpose.

Antoine de La Marche des Contes became lord of the territory in 1594 through marriage to Anne de Maucourt and oversaw the rebuilding that created the castle we see today. Architectural modifications made in subsequent years left their mark on the fortification and its defensive capabilities.

The northern wing houses a museum dedicated to school life from past centuries, with educational materials and documents on display for visitors to explore.

The castle sits on Grand-Rue in the village of L'Échelle within the Ardennes department and is easily accessible by car for visitors arriving from nearby towns. Plan to spend time exploring both the museum galleries inside and the exterior fortifications to get a full sense of the site.

The square watchtower at the northwest corner reveals the late medieval modifications that strengthened the entire structure. This tower's distinct shape differs from the circular corner towers and shows how the defensive systems evolved over time to meet changing military needs.
