Château de La Chèze, Medieval castle in Le Cheylard, France.

Château de La Chèze is a castle situated on a hilltop overlooking the valleys formed by the Eyrieux and Dorne rivers in Ardèche. The structure displays typical medieval architecture with walls and towers designed to command the surrounding landscape.

The fortress was built in the 13th century and initially belonged to the Tournon de la Chèze family until the mid-16th century. The Tersac family then acquired it through marriage and maintained ownership across generations.

The castle carries memories of religious conflicts that shaped the region in the 17th century, when Catholics and Protestants competed for control. Visitors today can observe how such tensions influenced the building's design and defensive features.

The location is best explored on foot, as the hilltop setting means some areas are steep and require stamina. Comfortable shoes and time are necessary to fully take in the structure and enjoy the views.

The building sustained fire damage during World War II that significantly altered its appearance. Since 1989, a local heritage group has worked steadily to restore it and preserve traces of this chapter.
