Château de la Vigne, Medieval castle in Ally, France
Château de la Vigne is a fortified castle featuring a square tower and multiple residential wings enclosed by moats in the Cantal region. The structure combines medieval defensive elements with later additions designed for more comfortable living.
Construction began in 1440 under Louis II de Scorailles to replace the former Scorailles fortress following the Hundred Years War. The castle represented a shift from purely defensive structures toward a stately residence for the nobility.
The interior walls display Renaissance paintings featuring mythological scenes that reflect the artistic tastes of its former residents. These artworks remain visible reminders of the cultural refinement that once flourished within these rooms.
Visitors can explore the castle grounds and collections of miniature cars and dolls during guided tours offered mainly in summer. It is best to confirm opening dates in advance before planning a visit.
During World War II, the castle provided shelter for resistance members and children who needed protection from persecution. This hidden chapter connects the medieval fortress with an act of humanity from the 20th century.
