Château de Septmonts, Medieval castle in Septmonts, France
The castle complex includes a 43-meter-high keep with seven floors, defensive walls, and the remains of a Renaissance bishop's palace.
Built in the 13th century by Jacques de Bazoches, Bishop of Soissons, the castle underwent major reconstruction in the 14th century under Simon de Bucy.
The castle represents the architectural transition between military fortifications and residential buildings, designed by an architect from King Charles V's court.
Visitors can climb the keep's spiral staircase and explore the castle grounds, while restoration work continues on various sections of the complex.
French writer Victor Hugo left his mark on the keep's walls during his visit in 1835, adding a personal touch to this historical monument.
