Château de Septmonts

The Château de Septmonts is a castle with a striking keep rising about 43 meters (141 feet) high across seven floors, enclosed by defensive walls. Remains of a Renaissance bishop's residence are still visible within the grounds, though restoration efforts are ongoing.

The castle was founded in the 13th century and gained its present appearance through significant renovations in the 14th century. These transformations shaped the structure visitors see today.

The castle shows a blend of military strength and residential comfort that was uncommon for its time. The layout reveals how inhabitants balanced protection with the desire for a more livable space.

You climb the keep using a steep spiral staircase that requires balance and careful footing. The interior spaces are partly dim with low ceilings, so move slowly and watch your head.

The writer Victor Hugo visited the castle in 1835 and left his signature carved into the stone walls of the keep. This mark remains visible today and connects the site to a notable figure in French literary history.
