Château de Maulnes, Renaissance château in Cruzy-le-Châtel, France
Château de Maulnes is a castle with an unusual five-sided shape that stands on a hillside in the French countryside. Inside, six stacked levels are connected by a central spiral staircase with a well that runs through the entire structure to supply water.
Construction of the castle started in the mid-16th century under the control of a noble family and continued over several years. The work experienced interruptions from regional conflicts until the building was finally completed.
The pentagonal shape of the castle creates an unusual layout that visitors notice right away when exploring the grounds. This geometric choice was uncommon for its time and remains distinctive in how people experience the building today.
The path to the entrance passes through a wooded area with several steps, which requires some physical effort but offers good views along the way. Visitors with limited mobility can use a shuttle service to avoid the climb.
The castle was designed with a mathematically planned layout that combines both defense and elegance in its form. This blend of practical military thinking with artistic ambition was remarkable for its era.
