Château de Mauriac

Château de Mauriac is a stone fortress surrounded by vineyards, featuring mullioned windows and a spacious inner courtyard at its center. The structure displays typical medieval fortification characteristics with thick walls and a vaulted cellar beneath.

The Knights Templar built this fortress in the 13th century as a strategic stronghold in the region. Later, the cultivation of woad, a plant used to produce royal blue dye, brought considerable wealth to its inhabitants.

The interior spaces function as exhibition halls displaying paintings and artworks from different artists. This active use shapes how visitors experience the place and transforms it into something beyond a historical monument.

Visitors should expect the building to be accessed via uneven vineyard paths, which requires sturdy footwear for comfortable walking. Plan your visit during regular opening hours to view the exhibitions without needing advance arrangements.

The castle includes five guest rooms with four-poster beds available for overnight stays, offering visitors a chance to sleep within the fortress walls. Below these rooms, the vaulted cellar can host celebrations for up to 150 people, providing an unusual event space amid the vineyards.
