Château d'Helfedange, Medieval castle in Guinglange, France.
Château d'Helfedange is a medieval fortified structure built around a central square courtyard with four main building sections. Two round towers anchor the exterior corners and define the castle's silhouette when viewed from outside.
The structure began as a fortified farm in the 12th century and passed through many owners over the centuries. Baron Pierre-Ernest de Créhange acquired it in 1602 and influenced its later development.
The castle served as the first location of the Moselle Normal School for teachers between 1822 and 1832, contributing to regional education.
Ask locally about the availability of guided tours through the medieval rooms, as these depend on the owners' schedule. Interior photography is permitted only with permission and should be arranged in advance when possible.
Seven medieval bread ovens are built directly into the two-meter-thick walls of the fortress. These ovens reveal how daily tasks and food preparation were embedded within the castle's defensive structure.
