Château du Puy Vidal, Medieval castle in Saint-Projet-Saint-Constant, France

Château du Puy Vidal is a medieval castle perched on a rock formation above the Bandiat valley. The structure comprises three cylindrical towers and a rectangular pavilion constructed during different periods.

The first documented owner was Guyot David, who pledged homage to Count Hugh of Lusignan of Angoulême in 1267. The building underwent multiple construction phases, reflected in its varying architectural styles.

The castle displays Gothic architectural details such as trilobed openings, molded windows, and octagonal chimneys topped with Gothic crowns. These features are visible throughout the structure and reflect the style of its time.

The castle now operates as an international creative retreat center offering intensive courses in painting, yoga, film, and writing. Visit lengths range from single days to full weeks depending on the course.

A monochrome fresco depicting armed soldiers preparing for the crusades lies hidden in the vaulted chamber beneath the main tower. This rare artwork offers a direct window into medieval imagination and concerns.
