Château de Ragny

Château de Ragny is a fortified castle in Burgundy with multiple structures supported by round towers and surrounded by a wide moat that once served defensive purposes. The buildings showcase medieval construction techniques with stone walls arranged around a central courtyard.

The castle was founded in the 12th century as a military fortress and served as the principal stronghold of the lords of Ragny throughout the Middle Ages. In the 20th century it became an administrative facility for banking institutions before shifting to recreational use.

From 1960 to 2021, the castle transformed from a center for the Bank of Algeria to a Bank of France vacation facility, marking changing social functions.

Visitors enter through a court of honor where the three main buildings are arranged in a single wing to the right side. This layout makes it easy to navigate the complex and view the different sections of the fortress.

A remarkably preserved arcade gallery from the late 12th century stands as the sole surviving element from the castle's original medieval construction phase. This architectural detail offers a rare glimpse into how medieval builders combined function with design.
