Château de Richemont

Château de Richemont, Renaissance castle in Saint-Crépin-de-Richemont, France.

Château de Richemont is a castle in Saint-Crépin-de-Richemont composed of two perpendicular wings meeting at a square tower with defensive features including narrow openings and protected walkways. The older wing from the late 16th century contrasts with the newer wing completed in the early 17th century, which offers higher ceilings and more spacious rooms.

Construction started in 1564 under Pierre de Bourdeille and extended until 1610, marking the transition between medieval and Renaissance architectural styles. The author Brantôme, as Pierre de Bourdeille was known, died in 1614 and was buried in the castle chapel.

The name Richemont comes from the wealthy family that built and inhabited the castle over centuries. Visitors can observe how the rooms reflect the social life and tastes of Renaissance nobility.

The castle welcomes visitors during summer months, while private tours can be arranged year-round by contacting the owners in advance. Since it remains an active residence, check opening details beforehand and plan accordingly to ensure your visit is possible.

The older section from 1581 features distinctly lower ceilings and smaller rooms that feel darker and more confined, while the section completed around 1610 was intentionally designed with taller ceilings and more light. This visible contrast reveals how residential preferences shifted noticeably over just a few decades.
