Château des Ternes

The Château des Ternes is a castle in Les Ternes with a central residential building, two round corner towers, and a square keep. Thick walls surround the entire structure for protection and defense.

English forces destroyed the castle in 1383 during the Hundred Years War, after which the lords of Espinchal rebuilt it. The 15th-century reconstruction added new defensive features that still stand today.

The interior shows neo-Gothic design choices and wall paintings in the Louis XIII style that tell stories from Ovid's writings. These artistic touches reveal how past inhabitants expressed their tastes and interests through decoration.

The location is remote and situated in a rural area, so it is wise to check access options before visiting. Be sure to confirm when tours are available, and dress for the weather since you will spend time both inside and outside.

The castle preserves a medieval dungeon and a defensive walkway with machicolations, both added during the 15th-century reconstruction. These defensive features show how important security was to those who rebuilt it after the conflict.
