Château du Bartas

Château du Bartas is a Renaissance castle in Saint-Georges with a rectangular main building and two circular towers at its eastern corners. A square courtyard surrounded by service buildings forms the core of this estate.

The castle was built between 1567 and 1569 by François de Saluste, a wealthy Gascon merchant who acquired the land in 1565. This construction period occurred during the flourishing of Renaissance architecture in southwestern France.

The castle served as home to poet Guillaume de Saluste du Bartas, a Renaissance writer who drew inspiration from life on the estate. Today visitors can sense the connection between the property and the literary world of 16th-century France.

Access to the interior requires prior arrangement, as the castle is not open to visitors on a regular basis. It is advisable to contact local authorities or tourism offices to organize a visit.

The name Bartas comes from the Gascon language and refers to an inhospitable forest that once covered the property before the castle was built. This linguistic origin reveals how the land transformed from wilderness into a nobleman's estate.
