Commanderie de Courval, Medieval commandry in Valdallière, France
The Commanderie de Courval is a stone complex with arched entrances and tall windows located in Normandy, representing part of the medieval military order heritage. The ensemble comprises several structures, including a chapel and residential quarters that illustrate the functions of this order settlement.
The site was founded around 1150 by the Knights Templar and served as one of their important regional settlements. Following the Templar order's dissolution in the early 14th century, the commandry passed to the Knights Hospitaller, who maintained it until the French Revolution.
The chapel preserves traces of medieval wall paintings and sculptures that reflect the religious traditions of the military orders. Visitors can still see these artistic remains within the stone walls today.
The site is currently undergoing restoration after being acquired by architects in 2021 to preserve its medieval structures. Visitors should be aware that not all areas may be accessible and that work is ongoing.
The grounds contained a cemetery where Knights Templar were buried following medieval funeral rituals specific to their order. These graves remain evidence of the order's practices and presence in the region.
