Château de la Barbée

Château de la Barbée is a Neoclassical structure with two square main floors, an attic level, and a hipped roof built from cut stone. The grounds retain portions of the original moat and three towers that belonged to the earlier fortress it replaced.

The castle was built in the late 18th century to replace a 15th-century structure that previously occupied the site. Major modifications to the exterior occurred during renovations in the 1820s, reflecting architectural trends of that period.

The chapel on the grounds honors Saint Barbara, reflecting the spiritual importance the family gave to this residence. The formal gardens and orangerie building along the northern moat show the design principles that French noble families valued for their country estates.

The castle is privately owned, but visitors can explore certain areas during annual heritage events that open the grounds to the public. Check ahead before visiting to confirm access, as entry is limited to these special celebration days.

Architect Adrien Lusson significantly altered the building's appearance by adding two pavilions and creating a monumental clock-topped pediment on the western facade. These 1820s renovations gave the structure the distinctive Neoclassical look it displays today.
