Château de Banne

Château de Banne is a medieval castle ruin that stands high above the village on a rocky peak, containing ancient walls, a staircase, and preserved stables. The remains reveal the defensive character of the site and give a sense of the original fortification layout.

The Beauvoir du Roure family owned the castle from the 15th century until the French Revolution brought it to a sudden end. The destruction occurred in 1792 and marked the final chapter of noble rule over the site.

The site is now used by a local association that organizes exhibitions and cultural events in the preserved stables. This activity breathes new life into the location and shows how the community cares for its heritage.

Access to the ruins is via a path that leads upward to a platform with views across the Jalès plain. The site is fairly accessible and offers good orientation with this elevated viewpoint.

After its destruction, the castle stones were purchased and reused in various buildings throughout the Ardèche region. This recycling of materials reflected the practical realities of the post-Revolutionary period.
