The fortress features preserved medieval walls, a main tower, sculptured elements from the 13th century, and mullioned windows from the 15th century.
The Jehan de Bellenave family constructed the castle in the 13th century upon foundations of a former Gallo-Roman villa dating from the 11th century.
During the Second World War, the castle vaults protected important stained glass windows from the Sainte Chapelle and the rose window of Notre-Dame.
The castle gardens open from July through August, Tuesday to Sunday between 12:00 and 18:00, with guided tours available upon reservation.
The castle entrance displays a coat of arms with initials of Louis 1st Jehan and Madeleine d'Anjou, surrounded by symbolic motifs from their 1496 marriage.
