Saint Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury, resided in this castle in 1164, six years before his assassination by knights of Henry II of England.
The castle currently houses the Amaury de la Grange Aeronautical Institute, providing education for future pilots and aircraft maintenance technicians.
During World War I, Baroness de La Grange opened the castle to British forces, earning her recognition as the 'mother' of their army.
