The castle dates back to the 11th century, and in 1406 the Saint-Vincent de Chalon chapter conducted extensive repairs on the structure.
The castle holds a connection to literature as Gabriel de Hénin-Liétard witnessed his sister's marriage contract with Charles de Batz-Castelmore, known as d'Artagnan, in 1659.
The property encompasses 80 rooms, a park, and 58 hectares of woodland, though it remains closed to public visits.
A French garden covering one hectare was designed around the castle during the complete restoration works in 1880.
