Église Notre-Dame et Saint-Loup de Montereau, Medieval church in Montereau-Fault-Yonne, France.

The Église Notre-Dame et Saint-Loup is a Latin-cross church near the confluence of the Seine and Yonne in Montereau-Fault-Yonne. Its pale grey and cream stone facade has a flat tower face with paired narrow windows on the left, a central rose window in a wide arched recess above a pointed portal, and a thicker flat-topped tower on the right. Inside, a tall narrow nave is lined with pointed arches on clustered columns rising to ribbed vaults, ending in tall stained-glass windows.

Michel de Corbeil, Archbishop of Sens, founded a chapter of nine canons here in 1195, and the church was built in stages: the north tower between the 12th and 14th centuries, the nave in the 13th, the north aisle in the 14th and the south aisle in the 16th. In 1419 John the Fearless and his servant Archambaud de Foix were provisionally buried here after his murder on the bridge. The chapter was suppressed in 1772, and in June 1940 bombing aimed at the Yonne and Seine bridges badly damaged the building.

Founded in 1195 by Archbishop Michel de Corbeil as a chapter of nine canons, the church was served by one of its chapels as the parish of Montereau. In 1772 Archbishop Paul d'Albert de Luynes suppressed the chapter, and the collegiate church became a simple parish church under the name Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Loup. Among the furnishings, look for the altarpiece classified in 1908 and the 17th-century Entombment of Christ by Frère Luc, classified in 1995.

The church stands near the confluence of the Seine and the Yonne, in the north-east of Montereau-Fault-Yonne, not on a hill. The facade has three vertical sections: a flat tower face on the left, the rose-window bay in the centre, and a thicker flat-topped tower on the right. Inside, the nave is tall and narrow, with pointed arches on clustered columns and ribbed vaults.

In 1419 John the Fearless, Duke of Burgundy, was buried provisionally in the church with his servant Archambaud de Foix after his assassination on the bridge at Montereau. The church keeps a 17th-century painting of the Entombment by Frère Luc, classified as a monument historique in 1995.
