Château de Montignac, Medieval keep in Montignac-Charente, France.

The square keep and its round towers rise from a rocky promontory overlooking the Charente Valley, marking the landscape with their substantial outline.

Built in 1140, the castle transferred to the Lusignan family in 1220 before being acquired by the La Rochefoucauld family, who maintained it until the French Revolution.

The stones from Saint Etienne Priory, demolished in 1960, were repurposed for the keep's restoration, continuing the local architectural legacy.

The main tower and ramparts remain closed to visitors due to restoration work scheduled for June 2025.

An underground passage extends beneath the keep, demonstrating the complex defensive systems employed in medieval military architecture.
