Ensemble castral du Montellier

Ensemble castral du Montellier is a fortified castle complex in Le Montellier featuring circular towers, high defensive walls, and a central keep constructed with large Savoyard bricks. The entire structure is surrounded by a moat and flanked by multiple towers that form a sloped enclosure.

The complex originated in the 13th century as a strategic military outpost and underwent expansion with additional structures during the following centuries. This growth reflected the evolving demands of fortress engineering and defensive needs.

The castle interior features monumental wall paintings with heraldic symbols and floral designs that reflect medieval French artistic traditions and the taste of its former inhabitants.

The site is best explored on foot by walking around the outer walls and moat to take in the full layout. Sturdy footwear is recommended since the grounds are uneven and some paths around the complex remain natural and unpaved.

Nine defensive towers flank the sloped fortification in a configuration that allowed simultaneous covering fire from multiple angles. This tower arrangement demonstrates how medieval engineers controlled defensive sightlines across different parts of the perimeter.
