Fort d'Uxegney

Fort d'Uxegney is a stone-built military installation featuring underground galleries and restored artillery turrets from the late 19th century. The gun chambers and military equipment display the technical capabilities of a border fortification from that era.

The fortification was built between 1882 and 1884 as part of a French defensive strategy against potential German threats. It was one of sixteen interconnected fortresses forming a continuous protective barrier.

The fort reveals how French soldiers lived and worked during this period through its preserved spaces and equipment. Visitors can experience the daily reality of garrison life and grasp the defensive role this installation held for the nation.

Access to the interior runs through underground passages that give visitors a strong sense of the confined spaces soldiers navigated. Sturdy footwear and a light jacket are advisable, as conditions below ground remain cool year-round.

The installation houses a working Galopin eclipse turret fitted with a 155mm cannon, a rare survivor of that era's military engineering. This rotating turret design with optical sighting systems represented advanced protection against artillery bombardment.
