Fort de Bois l'Abbé, Military museum and tourist attraction in Uxegney, France.
Fort de Bois l'Abbé is a military stronghold built with local stone on a hill near Uxegney at 384 meters elevation. The site includes barracks, ammunition storage, and defensive structures that remain largely intact today.
The fort was built between 1883 and 1885 as part of the Séré de Rivières defense system. It was designed to support the nearby Fort d'Uxegney and strengthen the region's strategic defenses.
The fort shows French military design from the 1880s with its four-sided layout and preserved gun positions built from local stone. The original masonry remains visible today and demonstrates the craftsmanship that went into these defensive structures.
The fort is open to visitors only during special events such as July 14th and Heritage Days. Guided lantern-lit tours are available and offer a memorable way to explore the underground spaces.
Inside the fort stands an original bakery that once supplied bread to neighboring fortifications. The preserved spiral-designed infantry shelters, known as pig's tail structures, show a distinctive solution for troop protection.
