Grand Bérard, Mountain summit in Haute-Provence Alps, France.
Grand Bérard is a mountain summit in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence that rises to 3046 meters with steep rocky slopes offering open views in all directions. From the top, you can see across multiple Alpine ridges and into the surrounding valleys and mountain ranges.
The summit was marked with a geodetic survey point in the 19th century to aid cartographers in mapping the Haute-Provence Alps. This marker has served mountaineers and surveyors as a navigation reference in this region ever since.
Local mountaineering groups maintain traditional hiking routes through Vallon du Parpaillon and Vallon de Bérard, passing down knowledge through generations.
The climb requires good fitness and is best done on clear days or early in the morning to benefit from stable weather and visibility. Start from La Condamine-Châtelard at the forest road near Pont du Bérard, where parking is available.
On the way up, the route intersects with the GR 6 long-distance trail at around 2530 meters before branching off toward Pas du Reverdillon. This connection between different paths makes the summit a useful junction point for hikers of varying experience levels.
