Grand Site des Deux Caps

The Grand Site des Deux Caps is a protected coastal area between Boulogne-sur-Mer and Calais featuring extensive chalk cliffs and natural rock formations. The site stretches across about 23 kilometers of coastline with marked hiking trails and information centers positioned at key locations.

Since ancient times, this site has served as a crucial navigation landmark, with its cliffs guiding countless ships through the English Channel. Over the centuries, these distinctive formations became essential markers for seafarers and navigators.

The eight communities here maintain traditional fishing practices and maritime customs passed down through generations. You can still see these traditions in the local harbors and along the shores, where fishers continue their daily work.

The site has numerous marked hiking trails connecting the two capes, with dedicated parking areas at various access points. The trails are well signposted and information centers provide guidance to help you explore the terrain.

Cap Gris-Nez marks the closest point between France and England, where on clear days the English coast becomes visible. This extreme proximity to the opposite shore makes the location something quite special for visitors who can appreciate the distance across the water.
