Labyrinthe de Merville, Boxwood garden maze in Merville, France.
The Labyrinthe de Merville is a green maze formed by tall boxwood hedges located on the grounds of Merville Castle. The network spans a large area with intricate pathways enclosed by carefully trimmed hedge walls.
The Marquis de Chalvet commissioned the maze in 1743 using a mathematical design pattern for the hedges. This original layout has remained intact through the centuries and continues to define its character today.
The maze features rotating educational themes that guide visitors through different historical and scientific subjects. Interactive stations are woven throughout the pathways, encouraging exploration and discovery as you walk.
Visitors receive a logbook to help navigate the maze, though you can also explore the winding paths at your own pace. Guided castle tours happen at regular intervals throughout the day and work well with a maze visit.
The maze is one of Europe's largest boxwood hedge structures and is shaded by oak trees that are over 200 years old. These natural giants create cool, shaded walking areas and add a forest-like quality to the experience.
