Issanka, Historic park in Montpellier, France
Issanka is a park near Montpellier with a mix of mature trees including maples, oaks, birches, and a large magnolia. Small bridges span the Vène river, connecting different sections of the grounds.
In 1862, the natural spring was captured and diverted to supply water to Sète, fundamentally changing the site's original purpose. This action redirected the course of the place's development.
In the early 1900s, families from Sète came here for social gatherings and dancing accompanied by orchestras. The shaded grounds and proximity to water made it a natural gathering place during hot seasons.
The site remains in a neglected condition with several abandoned structures scattered across the grounds. Plan to explore the natural areas while watching for uneven terrain and debris.
A former mansion called 'Mon Plaisir' once stood on the grounds and served an unexpected purpose during the 1940s. The building has long vanished, but its story reveals a hidden layer in the park's past.
