It was commissioned by Michaela Almonester, Baroness de Pontalba, and built between 1855 and 1859 by the architect Louis Visconti.
Known for its neoclassical architecture, the Hôtel de Pontalba symbolizes the affluence of the American aristocracy of the mid-nineteenth century.
The building serves as the official residence of the United States Ambassador to France.
Despite being the property of the U.S., it's known as the 'most expensive home in Paris'.
