Petite bibliothèque ronde, Children's library in Clamart, France
The Petite Bibliothèque Ronde is a children's library in Clamart composed of eight interconnected cylindrical structures made of exposed concrete. Each room is designed as a rounded space with curved shelves and white walls, creating an organic and flowing spatial experience.
The library was founded in 1965 with support from Anne Gruner-Schlumberger as sponsor. By 1972, it gained state funding and became a national center for children's literature.
The library was created specifically for young readers and hosts reading sessions, artistic workshops, and cultural programs developed with partners throughout the region. The rounded architecture itself reflects this child-centered approach, offering visitors a playful and welcoming space designed to encourage exploration.
The building is currently closed for restoration work and operates temporarily from another location. It is wise to check in advance what programs are being offered and how to reach the facilities.
Finnish designer Alvar Aalto created the interior furnishings, combining durability with bright colors throughout the space. The entire interior deliberately avoids right angles, creating an unusual flowing environment.
