Lycée technologique régional Dhuoda, Historical school in France
The Lycée technologique régional Dhuoda occupies a 1933–1936 building at 17 rue Dhuoda and rue Clovis in Nîmes, inscribed as a monument historique in 2002. Its rue Dhuoda facade carries large sculpted friezes by André Méric and three bas-reliefs over the main porch by Henri Calvet. Five courtyards are enclosed by buildings, and the rue Clovis wing is plain concrete.
In 1927 mayor Hubert Rouger proposed replacing the 1835-1836 École Pratique de Commerce et d'Industrie on place de la Calade. Architects Jean Christol and Léonce Salles and engineer Dufour drew the plans in 1931, and the Groupe Scolaire Hubert Rouger was built from 1933 to 1936. After 1945 it became the Collège Technique et Moderne de Nîmes, a second building followed in the 1960s, and in 2012 it took the name Lycée technologique régional Dhuoda. It has been inscribed as a monument historique since 2002.
The name comes from Dhuoda, a 9th-century princess married to Bernard of Septimania; relegated to Uzès, she wrote a Christian education treatise for her eldest son. The building opened in 1936 as the Groupe Scolaire Hubert Rouger, named after the mayor who proposed it in 1927. Since 2012 it has been the Lycée des métiers du Bâtiment et du Développement Durable, and it also houses the GRETA CFA Gard Lozère and a public CFA apprenticeship centre.
The school occupies a block between 17 rue Dhuoda and rue Clovis, with the main entrance and its sculpted porch on rue Dhuoda and secondary entrances on rue Clovis. Five courtyards are enclosed by the buildings, and the plainer concrete wing faces rue Clovis. It is an active secondary school, so the interior is not open to visitors; the decorated facade can be seen from the street.
The school's name honours Dhuoda, a 9th-century princess married to Bernard, duke of Septimania. After he relegated her to Uzès, she wrote a Christian education treatise for her eldest son. The building also houses the GRETA CFA Gard Lozère and a public CFA apprenticeship centre.
