Ouvrage Ferme Chappy, Military fortress of the Maginot Line in Viviers-sur-Chiers, France
Ouvrage Ferme Chappy is a fortress of the Maginot Line in Viviers-sur-Chiers featuring two combat blocks connected by underground galleries. The installation contains ammunition storage areas and a power plant equipped with Renault generators that supplied the entire fortification.
Built between 1932 and 1935, the fortress resisted German attacks in June 1940 with support from neighboring Ouvrage Fermont. The machine gun turret was removed during the German occupation that followed the fighting.
The garrison of 109 soldiers and three officers from the 149th Fortress Infantry Regiment protected this section of French territory.
The site is accessible on foot from Viviers-sur-Chiers and can be viewed from outside the structure. The location sits on elevated ground offering views across the surrounding landscape.
The name comes from a farm that sat directly above the underground barracks and entrance facilities. Visitors often notice how this simple structure above ground contrasts with the military complex hidden beneath.
