Ouvrage La Salmagne

Ouvrage La Salmagne is an underground fortress in Vieux-Reng consisting of two combat blocks linked by tunnels. These passages housed barracks and supply facilities below the first block to protect soldiers stationed there.

This fort was built between 1934 and 1940 as part of the Maginot Line to defend the French border. It was surrendered in 1940 after German forces advanced into the region.

The Association des Amis de la Forteresse du Secteur Fortifié de Maubeuge maintains this military heritage site, preserving its historical significance for future generations.

The site is best explored on foot, with stairs and narrow passages leading through underground sections. Visitors should wear appropriate shoes and bring a jacket, as the tunnels remain cool and damp year-round.

The two combat blocks were equipped with different weapon systems: the second block contained observation posts and grenade launchers, while the first block featured gun turrets with machine guns and anti-tank cannons. This arrangement reveals how each block was designed for specific defensive roles.
