Butte-aux-Cailles swimming pool, Art Deco swimming facility in Quartier de la Maison-Blanche, France
Butte-aux-Cailles swimming pool is a sports facility with three distinct pools housed in a building with neo-Romanesque features in Paris. The pool complex includes an indoor pool, a Nordic pool, and a children's pool that serve different needs.
Architect Louis Bonnier designed this facility in 1924 with modernist elements that reflected the progressive spirit of the time. The building emerged during an era when sport and public infrastructure became central to urban development.
The pool represents French public architecture with preserved mosaics and stained glass windows that connect sport and design. These decorative elements shape the visitor experience and show how function merges with artistic expression.
The pool is located in the Quartier Maison-Blanche and is easy to reach by public transport. Water temperatures are comfortably warm, with about 26.5 degrees in the indoor pool and 28 degrees in the Nordic pool, accommodating different swimming preferences.
A natural hot spring was discovered beneath the building in 1946 and still feeds and heats the water today. This makes the place one of the few public baths in Paris that benefits from natural geothermal energy, which is noticeable during a visit.
