Battant bridge, Tram bridge in Besançon, France

The steel and concrete structure spans 60 meters across the Doubs River, connecting the districts of Battant and La Boucle in Besançon.

The location marks the site of an ancient Roman stone bridge with five arches that provided the sole access point to Besançon for many centuries.

The bridge forms an essential link between the historical center and the Battant district, which developed from a community of grape growers and workers.

The modern bridge structure accommodates tram lines, enhancing public transportation access while maintaining pedestrian walkways across the river.

The construction required removal of 3000 tons of concrete from the previous 1953 structure to make way for the current metal framework.

The monuments and historical buildings of Besançon reflect 2000 years of architecture. The Vauban citadel, a UNESCO World Heritage site, overlooks the old town. The center houses Saint-Jean Cathedral with its astronomical clock, Granvelle Palace with its Museum of Time, as well as numerous civil, religious, and military buildings from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. The squares, parks, and quays lining the Doubs complement this architectural ensemble.
