Tour Tanguy, Medieval tower in downtown Brest, France
Tour Tanguy is a medieval tower standing on a rocky hilltop beside the Penfeld River, distinguished by its thick stone walls and Neo-Gothic decorative details. Inside, it houses a museum dedicated to the city's past.
The tower was built in the 14th century during the Breton War of Succession as a defensive position against English attacks. It formed part of the fortifications meant to protect the city from invasion.
The museum inside displays detailed dioramas showing how the city looked before World War II, giving visitors a sense of daily life as it once was.
The visit requires climbing only a few flights of stairs to reach the viewing platform overlooking the harbor. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes, as the interior passages are narrow and steep.
From the third floor, visitors can see through digital projections how the harbor looked decades ago while standing in the present. This technological overlay creates an immediate comparison between past and current views.
