Tour de Château-Chervix

Tour de Château-Chervix is a rectangular keep located in Château-Chervix that rises approximately 32 meters high with walls made of schist and granite. The structure has three interior levels and walls that measure about two meters thick, showing the solid construction methods used for such fortifications.

The Viscounts of Limoges built this tower in the 12th century to serve as a prison for their rivals. English forces later captured the fortification, demonstrating its importance in the region's medieval power struggles.

The projecting parapets added in the 14th century show how people in this region built their defenses, and you can still see these features today. They tell you something about what life was like when medieval fortifications needed to protect against attacks.

This tower sits on Place du 8 Mai 1945 where you can observe its exterior from the public square throughout the year. The site is accessible without special preparation, and viewing the walls and structure from outside is straightforward.

In 1553, Lord François de Coignac set fire to the castle following a murder, leaving only this structure standing today. This dramatic event left marks on the site that visitors can still see reflected in what remains.
