Truc de Grèzes

Truc de Grèzes is a mountain in Lozère rising to 1008 meters with steep slopes and a distinctive trapezoidal profile. It stands prominently above the Jourdane Valley with this characteristic shape visible from various angles.

Archaeological evidence shows that Neolithic people lived on this mountain in ancient times. It later developed as a major defensive settlement for the Gabales with a Gallic stronghold.

The name Saint-Frézal comes from a 13th-century bishop associated with the Gévaudan diocese, linking this place to local religious identity. The mountain carries this connection in its local usage and memory.

Spring and autumn are the best seasons for visiting due to favorable hiking conditions on the summit. Sturdy footwear is essential given the uneven ground and steep inclines found throughout.

The mountain is composed of a layer of Dogger limestone sitting atop Lias marls, creating a distinctive geological structure. This layering gives it a special formation that stands out within the regional landscape.
