Tavel AOC, Wine appellation in Rhone Valley, France
The Tavel AOC extends across 933 hectares of land on the right bank of the Rhone River, featuring limestone, slate, and sandy rocky soils.
The wine region gained recognition from the 14th century when the Avignon Popes and their court established a strong demand for these wines.
Local wine production techniques maintain strict regulations, requiring specific grape varieties like Grenache and Cinsault while prohibiting the direct mixing of red and white wines.
Visitors can explore numerous cellars and follow designated wine routes throughout the appellation, with many producers offering direct sales and tastings.
This appellation stands as the only wine region in France dedicated exclusively to producing rosé wines, maintaining this tradition since its official recognition in 1936.
